Keynote Speaker 3: Professor Lakhmi Jain Professor of Knowledge Based Engineering
Professor Lakhmi C. Jain is Director/Founder of the Knowledge-Based Intelligent Engineering Systems (KES) Centre, University of South Australia. He is a fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. He has introduced innovative educational techniques such as computer-aided learning programs directly associated with laboratory hardware. He also has initiated a postgraduate stream by research in the Knowledge-based Intelligent Engineering Systems area.
Prof. Jain's research interests focus on novel techniques such as knowledge-based systems, virtual systems, multi-agent intelligent systems, artificial neural networks, fuzzy systems, genetic algorithms, and the application of these techniques. The concept of software systems that he has developed has been adopted in "Handbook of Measurement Science: Elements of Change". Professor D. Hudson of the University of California USA reviewed the book. Her comments in "Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine" (IEEE Press USA, Vol. 18, 1999) included: "This volume is a step toward increasing exchanges between fuzzy researchers and biomedicine.
Prof. Jain has supervised/co-supervised 13 PhD theses and completed more than 20 research projects supported by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), and is currently supervising 5 PhD students. He has also initiated the First International Conference on Knowledge-based Intelligent Engineering and Information Systems in 1997. This is now an annual event. He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Knowledge-Based Intelligent Engineering Systems, and serves as Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part A, and Co-Editor-in-Chief of a book series by Springer, London.
